(P.925) #1-4
1. If you were one off Odysseus's shipmates, how would you feel about him? Is he foolhardy or a reliable leader?
If I was one of Odysseus's shipmates I think I'd feel that he was a pretty reliable leader. He led his men though tough times and did what a captain would do. One example of this is when they are with the Cyclops, Odysseus came up with a great plan and it worked.

2. The Odyssey was used as a part of Greek children's education for centuries after the poem was written down. How could the adventure with the lotus eaters teach us about the temptation to forget our troubles by dropping out of society?
The lotus eaters teach us that from dropping out of society, we are able to forget what troubles us the most which is stress, hard work, and our roles in life. The temptations to forget is massive because we are under such strong order.

3. How does Odysseus describe the Cyclopes' way of life? Contrast their customs with those of an ideal human community (be sure to think about the significance of the cannibalism).
Odysseus describes the cyclopes' way of life as horrid not like a human's at all. Being monstrous creatures. Most off the cyclopes' live in caves with cattle inside of them. All cyclops' are described as cannibals in the story. Polyphemus eats two of Odysseus men so he also sees them as murderous monsters.

4. "nobody" in Greek is outs, which sounds like Odysseus. In this episode, how does Odysseus show that he is clever with language? What curse at the end of this adventure foreshadows trouble?
Odysseus show he is clever with language by telling Polyphemus his name is, "No Man." When you say no man did something, it's like saying nobody did something. Therefore Polyphemus sounded like a fool telling the other cyclops' about his incident. When Odysseus finally reveals himself, Polyphemus curses him so his father can rain upon him.

1. Do you think Odysseus has changed since he started on his adventures? Explain your responses to Odysseus as a hero.
Odysseus has a strong presents with in his character. he starts from winning the battle of troy from begging lost at sea wanting to go home. he started from the top and now has reached the bottom. his character has definitely changed, emotionally, mentally, and now he has battle with many foe's and is a different person when he returns home.

2. What simile in lines 1031-1032 describes the feelings of Odysseus and his son as they embrace after twenty years? How would you describe exactly what the father and his son are feeling here?
The simile is, "...cries burst from both as keen and fluttering as those of the great taloned hawk, whose nestlings farmers take before they fly." Odysseus didn't want to go to war but he was forced to leave his family in Ithaca. When him and his son united it was a very strong emotional experience.

3. Dramatic irony refers to a situation in which readers or the audience knows more than the characters. Where in the scene in the swineherd's hut do we get a great sense of dramatic irony?
We get a sense of dramatic irony in story when Odysseus comes into the swineherd's hut in disguise, not knowing where Eumaeus allegiances lie he does not tell him his true identity but instead tells him made up stories. Eumaeus doesn't believe him, but enjoys the stories anyway. We know these are fake.
